The early history of Gilgit (The north most territory in Pakistan) is thousands of years ago. According to historians, Human presence dates back to some 2000 BC in Gilgit Baltistan region. But we can’t take you that back pictorially, but we can surely take you back in 1880s, some 140 years ago.

These are some photographs from book “The Gilgit Mission 1885-86, by Col. W.S.A. Lockhart and Col. R.G. Woodthorpe

Lockhart and Woodthorpe were British Army officers and explorers who went on a mission to explore Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral region, the heart of Himalayas and mountains. Here is the cover photo of their book, saying “STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL”
