Historical Background

Fairy Meadows, locally known as Joot, earned its current name from German climbers who described it as “the land where fairies live” during early Nanga Parbat expeditions. This location lies within the Raikot Valley, directly facing the massive Raikot Face of Nanga Parbat.

The region is part of Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, where communities speak Shina and rely on seasonal tourism, subsistence farming, and herding. Historically, this route has been traversed by mountaineers attempting the treacherous ascent of Nanga Parbat—also called the “Killer Mountain” for its dangerous climbing record. Today, however, Fairy Meadows has become far more accessible and popular among leisure travelers as well.

Fairy Meadows is located in the Raikot Valley, on the northern side of Nanga Parbat, in Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan.

  • Fairy Meadows is accessible from Raikot Bridge, a location on main Karakoram Highway.
  • You have to take jeep ride from Raikot Bridge to Tato Village which is 1:45 hrs jeep ride.

  • From Gilgit: 77 km from Gilgit via KKH (1:30 hrs travel time)

Fairy Meadows Road

The road to Fairy Meadows is often ranked among the most dangerous roads in the world. Also famously known as Second most dangerous road in the world.

  • The journey begins from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, where travelers switch from regular vehicles to local 4×4 jeeps.
  • The 15 km jeep track carved into the cliffs is extremely narrow, unpaved, and without guardrails. Only skilled local drivers are allowed to operate here.
  • You can not take your car here, even if its an extreme 4×4 vehicle.
  • The jeep track ends at Tato village, after which a 3-4 hour trek leads to Fairy Meadows.

Despite the danger, the adventure is part of the attraction, making the arrival at the meadows even more rewarding.

Fairy Meadows Jeep Charges

The jeep costs PKR 16,100/- for round trip and can accommodate max 5-6 persons. The jeep charges often change, to know current jeep charges, you can always contact us.

You can only book jeep when you arrive at Raikot Bridge, and jeeps are always available there because of local jeeps union which coordinates and manages all jeep drivers, and they make sure that your jeep driver is already waiting at Tato Village on your return at your given time.

Sometimes, Fairy Meadows road gets disconnected due to landslide, then you have to change your jeep mid way or where the road is broken, but everything is well managed by jeep union.
